Congratulations!!

Activity 1- Your first 9 weeks grades were outstanding and your parents are taking you out to dinner to congratulate you on a job well done.  They want you to pick a restaurant from the 4  below and make reservations for three.  You should quickly browse each menu and choose restaurant.

List each item you select on your work sheet and the price you chose for your  meal.  Find the total (circle it) and label what restaurant you went to.  As you know, at any dining eatery, you must leave a tip.  Well, at this restaurant, your service was okay, so you intend on leaving a 15% tip

What is the new total of your bill (show all of your work)? Also explain other situations in which you will have to figure tip, and explain any short cuts that you can do to figure tip without a calculator.

Select one appetizer, one meal item, and one dessert for each person in your party.

Add the total of items together; add 8% sales tax to the item.  (You will need to figure percentage)

Then using the Sub Total number calculate out how much tip is needed if the waiter gets paid 13% of your bill.

Use the accompanying worksheet to show all of your work.  You may work with a partner, but each student must complete the worksheet.

  Activity 2- Going to Grandma's

Now your parents are taking you to Grandma’s house in Detroit Michigan.  It will be a very exciting weekend and because your parents are so proud of your Math grades, Grandma wants to take ALL the family out to eat!  Your parents have been telling Grandma what a wiz you are at figuring the tax and tips on meals so Grandma wants to see you in action!

You are really going to have to think because the sales tax on food is 6% in Detroit.  How much are you going to spend on the meal in Michigan adding Grandma to your family bill and figuring the sales tax at 6%.

Oh by the way, the waiter spilled Iced tea on your brother’s head and was talking on his cell phone while taking your order.

Needless to say, you are non too happy with his service so you are going to cut his tip from 13% to 7%.  What will your final meal cost be?

Activity 3- Going Out with your Friends!

In these tough times, we are always looking for a value and that McDonald's paycheck doesn't go as far as it used to!

Which of these restaurants would be a good value based on price, sales tax, tip? You can take off more if you can find a coupon. You can work with a friend or in a group to complete the assignment but each member must turn in a comparison sheet showing work.

In each row of the sheet are the headings for each of the restaurants.  Students will look at the different restaurant menus.  Each person on the team will need to determine a meal from each menu.  Will it work for everyone to select a different item on each menu or will you need to choose a like item from each menu to determine which is the best value? Now you will need to determine the tip and tax for each meal.

Then we will compare the restaurants using a graph.
